They met under the old rain tree in college—the one where dry leaves always crunched under your feet and the wind whispered forgotten secrets. She was the loud sunshine in his quiet world, and he… he was the only silence she ever loved.

Every morning, he would wait on the same bench with two cups of chai. She would arrive 11 minutes late, every day, without fail—laughing, complaining, and full of life. And he loved every second of it.

They made promises. Not loud ones, not cinematic declarations. Just the kind you whisper into the other’s shoulder when the world is quiet. "Don’t go away, okay?"

"I won’t. Ever."

But 'ever' is a fragile word.

One day, without warning, she stopped coming. No texts. No calls. Just... silence. Like someone turned off the song of his life.

Days turned into weeks. He searched. He waited. And then, he stopped talking too.

It was a year later, on a cold December evening, that he heard from her. A letter—creased, tear-stained, and late. It read:

"I’m sorry I disappeared. I didn’t know how to tell you I was dying. Cancer. I didn’t want your days to be filled with hospital corridors and drip machines. I wanted your last memories of me to be warm chai and golden sunsets."

"I’m writing this with hands that tremble more than they type. But if love has any weight, then know mine was always heavier than my pain. I love you, and I hope you can forgive me for leaving the way I did."

He read it once. Then again. Then a hundred times. But what broke him most…

was that the letter was dated 6 months ago.

She had died two days before it arrived.

Now, every day, he sits under the same rain tree… with two cups of chai. One for him.

And one for the girl who never let him say goodbye.

Because some stories don’t end with goodbye.

They end with waiting.
